The recent discussions about removing the Red Crosses on white backgrounds from the Army’s MEDEVAC helicopters created quite an uproar from Army leadership. I lost count of how many SAMs they saw.

I had the privilege and honor of serving as a crew chief for twelve years on God’s own aircraft, the Huey.  If you were not so blessed I’m sorry but there’s nothing I can do about that now.         Gotta love the refrain in the song, “YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! Fixed wing are Gay!”   Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Looking at the photos I can’t believe that no one was killed.  Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.

Update: It sounds like the pilots were able to dump most of their fuel before having to eject and thereby preventing a huge fireball and post crash fire which would have almost certainly cost some lives .  If that’s the case they were both good and lucky.

 

In the Army we used to make fun of the Marines intelligence but we never questioned their toughness.

 

 

Using the old Caribou for aerial resupply is probably a low cost option but you would think the Army or Air Force could figure out how to do it themselves.  Still it looks like a fun job, maybe I’ll check it out.

I’ve got a lot of time in the back of the OH-58 back in my Army Aviation days.  Back then they were under powered, under gunned and under utilized.  I’m glad they finally figured out how to use them.
