Some landing and take-off highlights in awkward wind conditions at BHX Birmingham this winter (a record winter for stormy conditions in the UK). Note the frequent flexing of the planes’ wings in response to the turbulence.
Of the five “missed approaches” shown, three diverted to other airports, two were “go arounds” and landed successfully on second attempt.
I don’t know if it’s the camera angle but the one at 7:40 looked particularly odd, is he being blown off course like that or was he steering that way? Given the intensity of the gusts i’m surprised some of the were even attempted. If the max x-wind gust exceeds a plane’s spec is it a company/FAA regulation to abort/fly to alternate or is it pilot’s discretion? Also, any particular reason the runway appears so lumpy?
