One of the biggest challenges in ferrying small aircraft these days is finding av gas in the third world. Many airports that don’t see many piston powered aircraft have stopped stocking 100 low lead altogether or if they carry any at all it’s in 55 gallon drums. When you buy fuel from an airport that only carries it that way you buy it by the drum, not the gallon. That means if you just need ten gallons out of the last 55 gallon drum to fill your tanks that’s just too bad for you, you have to pay for the whole thing. It was the lack of Av gas in Russia that forced Stu and I to fly the Cirrus the long way around in our trip to the US from Singapore last year. It was entertaining, and a bit scary, watching how the fuel guys in India and Pakistan got the fuel from the drums to the wing tanks.
